Endodontics (Root Canal Treatment)

Worry free treatment with the gentle dental professionals.

Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) is needed when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth (known as the pulp) is irreversibly damaged through decay or injury. In some cases, your tooth could darken in colour, which may mean that the nerve of the tooth has died (or is dying). This would need root canal treatment.

The aim of the treatment is to remove all damaged and/or infected tissue from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection.

Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure. Most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits to your dentist.

Will the tooth be safe after treatment? – Yes. However, as a dead tooth is more brittle it may be necessary to restore the tooth with a crown to provide extra support and strength to the tooth.

  • Safe procedure and reliable results.
  • No surgery required.
  • Suitable for most ages and conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A root canal filling is carried out when the nerve and blood vessel in the canal within the tooth root has been badly damaged. The canal is shaped, disinfected and packed with a rubber filling material. All this is designed to keep the tooth pain free and functional.
Teeth which need a root canal filling are very often a bit jumpy. All our dentists are very experienced in giving dental anaesthetics to ensure you have a pain-free treatment. However, you must remember that you can always stop us at any stage in a treatment if you have concerns.
Root canal treatment is usually very successful, with around 9 out of 10 teeth surviving for 8-10 years. The survival is optimised if the tooth is protected with a dental crown after the root filling, and by you looking after the tooth with your superb home cleaning regimen.
