Dental Veneers

A long-lasting natural-looking solution for damaged teeth.

Veneers are thin slices of porcelain. These are precisely made to fit over the visible surface of your front teeth, like a false fingernail fits over a nail.

Veneers are an ideal way of treating discoloured or unsightly teeth, closing gaps between front teeth, or repairing chips and cracks.

A small amount of enamel is removed from the tooth, usually the same thickness as the veneer will be. An impression is taken by the dentist and sent to a dental technician for the veneer to be made in the laboratory. The veneer is then bonded to the tooth to form a strong and natural-looking repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

A veneer is a very thin piece of porcelain, akin to a false fingernail, which is bonded to the front surface of a tooth.  Veneers can improve the shape, position, and colour of your teeth. They can make a chipped tooth look whole again, give a rotated tooth the appearance of being back in line or enhance the shade of stained and discoloured teeth. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps between teeth.

Because veneers are very thin pieces of porcelain and are held in place by a strong adhesive, very little preparation of the tooth is needed. They can very quickly improve the shape, position and colour of your teeth. They can also last longer than alternative options such as composite bonding.

You will be able to smile with confidence again. Veneers make your teeth look natural and healthy.

Tooth preparation for a veneer is kept as minimal as possible, removing only as much original tooth tissue or filling material to give enough space for a strong, functional and aesthetic restoration

Once prepared, we will take an impression of your teeth, choose a shade match that you are happy with and send this to our talented technicians. Around two weeks later you will need to return to the practice to have the veneer fitted.

Because the preparation of the tooth is so slight you will probably not need a temporary veneer placed on your tooth. The tooth will look very much the same after preparation but will feel slightly less smooth. However, if we need to, then temporary veneers can be made and fitted while your final veneers are being made especially for you.

Veneers may last for many years, with evidence showing they last 10-15 years on average. They can chip or break, just like your own teeth can. Small chips can be repaired, or a new veneer fitted if there are larger breaks to them. Avoiding certain habits (nail biting, eating hard foods with front teeth and grinding) will significantly enhance the life of your veneers. If you do show evidence of grinding, we will make you a guard to protect your teeth/veneers.

Porcelain veneers are just one option for a smile makeover. Composite bonding, dental crowns and bridges or orthodontic braces might be more suited to you.

You can be sure you are in safe hands as our dentists will give you the best advice.
